Dark Chocolate Health Benefits Help the Heart

Recently, we have been hearing too much about dark chocolate health benefits. It seems that for the longest time that it has been available to us; researchers have just discovered that it is able to protect our cardiovascular system. And why is this so? How can something so sweet and tasty be so healthy? This is because of the plant nutrient flavonoids that are found in cocoa beans – those little dark brown things that primarily make up chocolate.

Flavonoids aid in protecting the plants from environmental toxins, also helping in repairing damage. Commonly found in fruits and vegetables, flavonoids also possess an antioxidant power. As you now should be aware of, antioxidants protect the body from the damages that free radicals bring. In the case of your heart, the depletion or absence of antioxidants causes low-density lipoprotein (popularly known as bad cholesterol) to accumulate and form plaque on the walls of your artery.

Flavonols are the main flavonoid that is found in cocoa. Along with its antioxidant qualities, it also possesses properties that will aid in vascular health like lowered blood pressure, improved blood flow and making blood less sticky.  Knowing all these, it would probably be a good idea then to include a healthy chocolate diet along with your typical selection of healthy food.

Good chocolate diet depends on the kind of chocolate

But before you head to your kitchen and stuff your mouth with chocolate, you might want to know that not all kinds of chocolate have high levels of flavanols. Naturally, cocoa has a strong and pungent taste so it will have to go through several processing. However, the more processing it goes through, the more flavanols are lost.

Many of the chocolates found today and highly processed. Common knowledge is that dark chocolate contains the most flavanols but new studies have shown that it will really depend on how the dark chocolate is processed. It is good to know that many of the chocolate manufacturers today try to keep the highest possible amount of flavanoid in their chocolates. To get the most dark chocolate health benefits, pick dark chocolate over milk chocolate and cocoa powder that were not Dutch processed.

But doesn’t chocolate contain fat? And isn’t this harmful for the heart? Not exactly. Again, this will depend on the type of chocolate. Watch out for those that contain extra ingredients that will only add calories and fat. There are still more research needed on just how much chocolate you include in a healthy diet. But still, with this new knowledge on dark chocolate health benefits, you would not feel as guilty when you munch on a small piece of dark chocolate from time to time.
