High Flavonol Chocolate Reduces Blood Pressure

Here’s another study about high blood pressure and dark chocolate. Actually, it’s more of a study of other studies from 1955 to 2009. They looked at scientific studies about the health benefits of dark chocolate antioxidants and the effects on high blood pressure.

This was published in BMC Medicine June 2010 (and is being reported everywhere). It turns out that high flavonol dark chocolate can make a difference in people with high blood pressure. According to this summation of other  studies, it looks like it is fairly clear (for a long time) that people with high blood pressure will see a result with dark chocolate.

Pooled meta-analysis of all trials revealed a significant blood pressure-reducing effect of cocoa-chocolate compared with control (mean BP change +/- SE: SBP: -3.2 +/- 1.9 mmHg, P = 0.001; DBP:  -2.0 +/- 1.3 mmHg, P = 0.003). There are probably more real studies left to do to see what really high flavonol chocolate can do for people with high blood pressure. There was less of a statistical result for people with normal blood pressure (as you would imagine.)

What’s interesting about this chocolate study is that it covers many years of research on dark chocolate. Looks like the rumors are true. Chocolate can be healthy.

The dark chocolate study concludes: “Our meta-analysis suggests that dark chocolate is superior to placebo in reducing systolic hypertension or diastolic prehypertension. Flavanol-rich chocolate did not significantly reduce mean blood pressure below 140 mmHg systolic or 80 mmHg diastolic.”

If youre still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then youll know which is right for you.
